Bollywood
Cinema is India's great social leveler: from the President right down to the cobbler, everyone loves a good film. in fact Mumbai boasts the largest movie industry in the world.

Popularly called Bollywood, it churns out nine hundred films every year, mostly racy potboilers or mushy romances filled with song, dance, violence and melodrama.

Heroes drive around in flashy cars, oomphy actresses cavort in its bitsy mini skirts and the poor boy always succeeds against the rich villain. But India also has a serious parallel cinema that has never quite wooed the box office.

Made for the country's cognoscenti, so-called art films regularly win awards at Cannes and other international festivals, and their actors are universally acclaimed.

The average Hindi film is about three hours long at the end of which you will probably feel like a wrung out rag, but the audience never seems to mind. Indian film stars are demi - gods and the reigning matinee idols often compete with the more divine variety for public attention!

What's more, in Bollywood, fiction and reality often get blurred; there are real life stories of actors who once slept on the pavements outside their palatial homes, proof that fairytale endings do not belong to cinema alone.
When in Bombay, watch a Bollywood Movie. It's the easiest way to get under the skin of a local bombaywalla and truly experience what it's like being an Indian. The country is fascinated with motion Pictures and the Actors have demi-god status. Infact a couple even have temples built to them. What can you expect when you go to one of these movies: The Majority of Indian Movies are musicals, and mostly of a romantic nature. Love is a favorite theme of Bollywood directors, also respect for parents / elders, an ethical moralistic hero, and an unethical usually foreign villain. The movies are usually overly suggary and could be perceived as corny. But go with an open mind and not a critical one and it will be an experience that will give you more insight into the people and the traditions make India tick.

If you are interested in seeing a film being made in one of the two major shooting studios in Mumbai, both located in the northern area close to the airport (Andheri West and Goregaon), you will need to go to one of the major production companies and ask for a letter that will allow you to enter. Obviously this is not as easy as it seems but it might be worth a shot. Most production companies are located between Bandra and Juhutara. Try RK films, Mehboob Studios, Yash Chopra Films or Dharma productions. I was fortunate enough to meet Superstar Akshay Kumar, a simple kinda shy person. He very kindly offered tea, drinks and an instant photo shoot which was unexpected. About 2 months later, I mailed some pictures to him and they came back autographed with my name on them ! Thanks Akshay !

Mockingly called Bollywood by locals and cynics, Film City clings to the outskirts of the National Park, and is practically overrun by assorted stars and starlets -- the demi gods and goddesses of Modern India. Don't snigger. Bollywood churns out over 900 films every year, all packed with those mandatory elements of song, dance, melodrama, violence and erotica that Indian audiences love. Which is probably why Film City sets are heavily booked around the year. They are closed to visitors, but special permissions can always be "obtained" to check out the action.

Yeah, they are gonna make sense to you now, cos they have less of the senseless dance routine and more of the acting stuff. But still will have the usual masala that goes into making a typical bollywood potboiler, have fun
